WEEK 3: AUGUST 24-28

WOW! Week 3 already! Real instruction will begin this week.

We'll be introducing the PLOT and practice identifying the plot sequence of short stories all week.
We'll also continue our introduction to the many reading genres.
Throughout the week students will also share the learning-style posters they completed last week - we'll display these in the hall outside our door.
I will use FLEX time this week to request students who have NOT completed their reading benchmarks.

Students and Parents - Reading benchmark results are recorded in Power Grade. Remember 3 things:

The numbers represent the student's current reading level based on grade. For instance 7.1 means seventh grade first month.
These tests may NOT be retaken as they are benchmarks/starting points; students will take these at the beginning of each trimester so we/they can track their growth
Although these do have a letter grade attached - these grade-level "scores" are NOT included in the trimester grade.

TUESDAY'S AFTER SCHOOL HELP

To help students I will be holding an after-school "reading and homework club" from 2-3 PM each Tuesday. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that your student attend if he/she has an NP or needs to complete any assignment, including any i-Reads.

Students may bring non-messy snacks to munch on while they work.

The purpose of this time is to help your student get and stay caught-up in class. They will have access to a phone at 3, so you can provide a ride for them.

What we'll be doing in Lanugage Arts

Our 7th Grade Language Arts class is an exciting course based on the Utah Standards. Standards require students to read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively. They will "read stories and literature, as well as more complex texts that provide facts and background knowledge in areas such as science and social studies. Students will be challenged and asked questions that push them to refer back to what they've read (in a variety of written responses, including narrative, argumentative, and explanatory), stressing critical thinking, problem-solving and analytical skills that read required for success in college, career, and life"(http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy)
